40 Ways To Be Happier Everyday

1. Have a morning routine

Your morning habits set you up for the entire day and if you start your morning in a rush then you will have a difficult time redeeming your day. It’s important to have a mindful routine in place in order to have a happy mind and body from the beginning of your day.

2. Write daily affirmations

Affirmations can help you to develop a more positive perception of yourself and your life. The repetition of positive affirmations will keep you motivated and focused on your goals. They can influence the way you think and behave.

3. Start morning pages

If you haven’t heard of morning pages before, they are basically three pages of writing done every morning. The idea is to allow your pages to be messy as you write down anything and everything which you’re feeling and thinking. Doing this allows your mind to become a lot clearer and for you to be much more focused.

4. Drink more water

When you’ve dehydrated your brain functions on less fuel making you feel drained and tired, your body also needs water first thing in the morning to flush out any bad toxins.

5. Stretch every morning

Stretching your body when you feel stressed allows your muscles to let go of where you’re carrying stress. It relieves the tension in your muscles and helps you to relax and sleep better.

6. Takes short breaks in between work

Taking breaks in between work can help you stay focused over long periods of time.  Taking short breaks every now and then can help you focus on your big-picture goals and stop you from doing too much busy work. Busy work is work which makes you feel productive but isn’t actually helping you achieve your goals.

7. Own indoor plants

If you’ve ever looked me up on Instagram, you’ll notice that I’m a bit of a plant lady. Houseplants not only look beautiful but they are also good for your well-being. House plants reduce stress and boost your mood, and depending on what house plants you get, there are many which remove toxins from the air, making them perfect for your home too.

8. Wake up earlier

You can be happier everyday just by waking up 15-30 minutes earlier. Waking up earlier can have a positive impact on your life as it gives you an instant sense of accomplishment and if you wake up before the rest of the household wakes up and before you need to go to work or school, you will have time to work distraction free.

Reading is the perfect activity before going to sleep. Reading relaxes your body, slows down your breathing and leaves you feeling calmer. It’s no wonder we sleep better after reading a book, as opposed to staring at our phone or the TV.

10. Listen to podcasts

Listening to podcasts is such a simple, free and easy investment in your personal growth. Listening to the same songs and constantly being interrupted by adverts on the radio can get boring. Try listening to podcasts instead, there are so many inspiring and educational podcasts to choose from. Here are some of my favourite personal growth podcasts to get you started.

11. Set goals

Be happier by setting yourself goals. By having goals you will have a clearer focus on what’s important to you and more clarity and direction when making life decisions. When setting monthly goals you’re able to review your goals more often without becoming overwhelmed. You can reflect on what you’ve done so far and where you’re heading and focus your attention on what’s important to you. Start setting monthly goals with the Positivity Planner.

12. Eat fruit and vegetables everyday

Try to eat fruit and vegetables every day for a healthy and balanced diet. Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy and give the body many nutrients you need to keep going.

13. Add your to-do list to your calendar

By adding your to-do list to your calendar you will be able to see clearly what your day looks like, and if you are packing too many tasks into your day. When adding your to-do list to your calendar, it’s a good idea to first add in your other commitments. Such as work, school, working out, downtime and seeing friends and family. Doing this first means you won’t pack too much work into your day giving you a good work life balance.

14. Start a gratitude list – daily, weekly or monthly

The more you’re grateful for in your life, the more you will find to be grateful for. To practice gratitude grab a pen and paper and write down all the things you’re grateful for, you can do this daily, weekly or monthly.

You can be happier everyday by simply keeping your space tidy and inspiring. When your environment is clean and clutter free your life and your mind will feel a lot less messy as well. I recommend reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying* by Marie Kondo, her book will help you to transform your home into a clutter free space using the KonMari method.

18. Workout regularly (at least 3 times a week)

Working out regularly can massively increase your mood, as it allows you to reset your mind, take care of your body and during your workout you will release endorphin’s which will make you feel happier. Sometimes I really don’t feel like working out but after I force myself to get out of the house and take care of my body, I always feel great afterwards

Take care of your teeth by visiting the dentist regularly (twice a year) and brush and floss your teeth everyday. Flossing your teeth will not only prevent plaque build up but it will also stop your gums from bleeding and keep your teeth healthy and strong.

Stop criticising yourself and stop under valuing your skills, your abilities or your time. Sell your products and services at the price which they are worth and speak up in your work review if you believe you deserve a pay rise. Too many of us under value ourselves and settle for less than we are worth and less than we deserve.

24. Stop comparing yourself to others

Because of social media we are up to date with everything and everyone, which makes it too easy to compare ourselves to others. But we must stop because this behaviour is self-sabotaging. Focus on you and your journey and remember that what you see online isn’t the whole truth. It’s other people’s  highlights, we are only seeing their best parts. Instead of comparing yourself to others, be inspired by them, let there achievements motivate and encourage you, say to yourself, if they can do then so can I.

25. Don’t stay at a job you hate

This is key is being happier everyday. If you really don’t like your job, then find a one new. So many people stay at jobs they don’t like, usually because it’s too much effort to find a new job. But if the cons out weigh the pros, then it’s time to look for something new. It might be hard work but it will be worth it when you don’t feel anxious about your job. While you’re looking for a new job, check out this post on what to do when you hate your job.

26. Use your lunch to be active

Use your lunch to go for a walk outside, get some fresh air and simply step out of the office and away from your desk. You will come back feeling refreshed, focused and will have a clearer mind. Your mind and body will be thankful for the light exercise.

27. Wear SPF

We all know how damaging the sun is to our skin and this includes sunbeds. A simple and healthy way to protect your skin is to add a daily moisturiser with SPF to your morning regime. You might think that you don’t need to wear SPF because it’s not a sunny day, however the clouds only filter out the light, not the UV rays.

28. Avoid the snooze button

By hitting that snooze button and going back to sleep your brain starts its sleep cycle all over again. Meaning, when your alarm goes off again, you will be in a deeper sleep than before. Leaving you feeling much more tired than the first time your alarm sounded. Download the app called ‘Alarmy’ you will love it and hate it at the same time, because you will not be able to go back to sleep with this alarm.

29. Start a blog

I believe that blogging is one the best forms of personal development. Putting yourself, your thoughts and your ideas out into the world for anyone to see is scary but it’s also very rewarding. When you start a blog you’re faced with self-doubt and fear. It’s a battle between wanting to stand out from the crowd but also wanting to fit in. Writing this blog has changed me, especially as I write about personal growth, it’s made me see the world in a different light and forced me to be more open minded and positive.

30. End bad relationships

If someone is consistently bringing you down then your relationship with them is probably toxic. Remember, a relationship doesn’t have to be romantic to be toxic, if you have friends, or family or colleagues who put you down and make you feel sad then it’s time to end those relationships. You don’t deserve to have toxic people if your life, your circle should be filled with positive people who support and love you.

31. Believe in yourself

Believing in yourself is a key part of being happy. You’re so much more capable than you think you are. If you’re having trouble believing in yourself, just say to yourself, I just want to see if I can and then do exactly that and see what happens. Get rid of all the reasons why you think you shouldn’t do something and simply “see if you can”.

32. Travel more

Travelling improves your mental health and reduces your stress levels. Getting out of your daily routine and setting foot in another place will open your mind to new ideas, new opportunities, new cultures and new ways of living.

33. Earn a side income

Earning a side income will help your bank balance and boost your self esteem. I earn a side income from my blog and I feel more proud of the money I earn from blogging than I ever have as an employee. As an employee you are paid for your time, you show up and you get paid. With a side income you are paid for the effort you put in and the value you bring. Here are 10 ideas of things you can create and sell online.

34. Donate to charity

When you donate to charity you will feel like a better person and have peace of mind knowing that you have helped someone in need. The happiness that you will get from giving to those in need will help you feel needed and give you a sense of purpose.

35. Write a monthly bucket list

What’s on your bucket list? At the start of every month I create a collection of dreams, goals and aspirations, these are both big and small goals. Most bucket lists are created with at least a year to achieve them, but most bucket lists are forgotten about. Having a monthly bucket list means you’re more likely to tick things off. A shorter time frame also gives you the opportunity to think about the smaller things you want to achieve.

36. Make time to reflect

Make time at the end of every month to reflect.  Reflection is an important tool for growth, by reflecting for just ten minutes at the end of every month you will make more progress towards your goals.

37. Track your habits

By creating new habits for yourself you can introduce more positivity into your day-to-day. By using a habit tracker you can keep yourself accountable to your new habits by measuring your progress. Use the habit tracker daily or weekly and see if you can notice patterns.

38. Admit your mistakes

Sometimes you need to admit your mistakes and say the words “I’m sorry”. Those words can fix a relationship and change the direction of your life. Admit to yourself when you’re wrong and admit to others when you’ve made a mistake, there’s nothing wrong with making a mistake as long as you own up to it and make amends.

39. Stop wasting time

You can be happier everyday if you stop wasting time. Life is full of distractions which can make it seem impossible to manage our time. Too often we say we don’t have time to do something, but what we really mean is that it’s not a priority, therefore we’re not willing to make time for it. A good way to stop wasting time is to give yourself time limits for when you’re going to work and when you’re going to rest. By creating a time limit you will become more focused and productive as you will have dedicated time to work and to rest. Because trying to work and watch TV at the same time is neither productive or relaxing.

40. Give yourself a break

No one holds you to such high standards as you do but it is okay to give yourself a break. We’re all guilty of setting ourselves ridiculously high standards but when you don’t have time for self-care is when you need it the most. Give yourself permission to rest and allow yourself to re-charge, self-care can be a huge help to overcome feelings of burn out.
