10 Mindful Daily Rituals
Creating mindful daily rituals will help you create long-term positive changes in your life. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by your fast-paced lifestyle and you’re starting to fall into a slump, sometimes it’s the small but positive changes that you make that can clear the clutter from your mind and bring us back to the present moment.
So if you’re currently feeling a little scattered in life then take a look at these 10 mindful daily rituals and see if you’re missing any of these from your lifestyle. Can you implement any of them into your routine?
Drink water when you wake up
Start your day with a glass of water, even if your body isn’t telling you that it’s thirsty, it probably is! The first thing your body needs after a good night’s sleep of about 7-8 hours is water. When you’ve dehydrated your brain functions on less fuel making you feel drained and tired and giving you mood swings, your body also needs water first thing in the morning to flush out any bad toxins.
Get enough sleep
The first mindful daily ritual you want to adopt is getting enough sleep because if you want to wake up happy you first need to have a good night’s rest. If your lifestyle allows it, try to wake up around the same time each day and go to sleep around the same time. For a good night’s sleep, keep your room cool, make your bed comfortable, ditch electronics before bed and don’t use your bedroom as a place for eating.
Meditate or sit in silence with your thoughts
Daily meditation is one of the most effective ways to deal with stress and find calmness and peace in your everyday life. When we feel like we have little control over our lives, we tend to avoid the present moment and ignore what’s happening inside our body, mind, and soul. A lot of the time we’re looking for distractions from the present, whether that be through social media, food or TV. By practising daily meditation you’re training your mind to be present and allowing your emotions to come and go. You don’t need to be a guru to meditate, start small with just a couple of minutes in your morning routine, and start your day in calmness and with positive thoughts.
Reset your space
A messy environment equals a messy mind, well it does for me anyway! It can be difficult to focus and be inspired when your space is disorganised. Make a habit of wiping your surfaces, cleaning dirty dishes, making your bed and putting things back into their ‘home’. Fall in love with your workspace, this is particularly important if you work from home. Your workspace should inspire you, it should motivate you and should help bring out the best in you. After all, this is where the magic happens. Don’t let your workspace get cluttered with paperwork and unwanted items, organise your work and make life easier for yourself.
Resist your phone
All day, every day, our minds are cluttered with notifications, alerts and to-do lists! Whenever you get the urge to check your phone, try to catch yourself and resist the urge. Think about why you want to check it, is it because you’re bored? Because you’re doing a difficult task? Checking our phones constantly makes us feel productive but in reality, we’re not actually being productive we’re just scrolling mindlessly! Give your mind more time away from your phone and away from social media, and see how much of a positive impact it has on your well-being.
Be outside
The majority of us will spend most of our working day in an office sitting in front of a screen, which surely can’t be good for our well-being. Try to find time every day to be outside, even if it’s only 10-20 minutes. If you take your phone, don’t spend the whole time staring at the screen and mindlessly scrolling on social media. Instead use it to take photos of nature, every time you see something beautiful take a photo of it. You can delete the photos after if you wish, but by doing this you will take more notice of your surroundings and ease your mind away from any worries you may have.
Eat a full and healthy breakfast
Breakfast is a must, it’s the most important meal of the day. Breakfast will energise your body and help improve your concentration and productivity. If you want to kick start your day, make an effort to eat a full and healthy breakfast every day, by swapping the cereal bar you quickly eat on the train to work for oats and berries or organic scrambled eggs and whole grain toast. A nutrient-loaded breakfast will give you the energy you need to power through your day!
Journal / write
Journaling is the perfect way to practice self-care and reflect on your life. It will help to release any stress from the day and let go of any thoughts or worries which are still running around in your mind. Use your journal to manage your thoughts, you can do this by writing down your feelings, ideas or goals. A calming way to end the day is by writing down everything you’re grateful. If you’re stuck for ideas, here are some journaling prompts for self-reflection and self-discovery.
Move
Take care of your body and your body will take care of you. Exercising regularly will enhance your well-being by realising endorphins and relieving stress. You’ll have more energy and enjoy a sense of achievement as you complete each workout. Not only will you feel stronger and healthier you’ll also reduce any feelings of anxiety and depression. If that wasn’t enough, exercise will also improve your overall body image, leaving you feeling confident.
Read a book before bed
Reading is a super relaxing activity which is why it’s perfect for your bedtime routine. Sometimes we just need a place for our minds to escape to when we are having a stressful day or feeling a little overwhelmed. Here are some of my favourite personal growth books.
